MAY ESPY

Marcola School District Board Members want to Recognize our students monthly for exceptional performance at school.

ESPY: Exceptional Student Performance this Year – award is given to students doing well academically and having an exceptionally positive attitude about school. They demonstrate respect and responsibility towards staff and their peers.  They show courage by not conforming to Peer pressure and refusing to accept anyone who bullies.

The MSD School Board and the District want to recognize these students by celebrating their success at the beginning of each monthly Board Meeting.  Students receive a certificate, meet each of our Board members, and their names are announced on the district website.

April 2024 ESPY Winners are;

Raegan Binford - 1st  grade nominated by Michelle Mercer

“Raegan is a model student and friend to all that meet her. She consistently turns in her best work with attention to detail. She loves challenging herself and frequently asks if she can keep working to go above and beyond with writing tasks. Raegan's quality of work has been exceptional in all areas all year.

Most importantly, Raegan has always shown kindness, patience, and willingness to help whenever she can. 1st grade has really been lucky to have a student and friend like Raegan!”

May 2024 ESPY Winners are;

Brooklyn Whisenant - 2nd  grade nominated by Selene Konyn

“Brooklyn is an outstanding student who does her very best every day to go above and beyond what is expected of her. Each morning she walks through the door ready to learn. She is always attentive, learning, and participating in class. She completes all of her work with extreme care and is dedicated to doing things correctly.

Brooklyn's phenomenal attitude is a breath of fresh air. She continues to stay positive through all challenges. Brooklyn is a warm and openhearted classmate. She never discriminates or judges. If someone needs a friend to play with or a partner to pick them up, Brooklyn is there.

Brooklyn is the embodiment of an Exceptional Student, Friend, and Mustang.”

Tayvion Mckenna - 8th grade nominated by Billy Dahmen

“Tayvion is what I call a quiet leader. He is the type of person who leads by example. He comes prepared to engage with his academics, his teachers and his peers in a positive way everyday.

Tayvion is the rare student who has that perfect balance of humor yet restraint. He brings a lightness to the classroom all without loosing the main purpose of being in class, the learning. He has a drive to produce quality products. When we did a lesson on data collection and graphing, which we lovingly call "The Great Crumbling", because if its not a 4 out of 4 it gets crumpled, he took the challenge to create a perfect data table graphs head on. He loves a challenge and is graceful in defeat, using it to learn and do better the next time around.

Tayvion is the kind of kid who is in the middle of everything, yet when you see him there, you know things won't get out of hand because of his calm demeanor and the way others look to him as a leader.”

Quentin Makinson - 12th grade nominated by MHS Staff

“The Mohawk staff wants to recognize Quentin Makinson with the final ESPY of the 2023/24 school year. Quentin is an extremely deserving candidate, who would be a great choice each month, and we are happy to present him with an ESPY to go along with the many other honors he has received upon his graduation.

Quentin is a hard-working student who has pushed himself to access high-level classes at Lane Community College while balancing a workload at Mohawk High School. This year, he tried new sports, assisted staff in website development, and helped peers learn to use some of the more complex tools on campus. As he walked across the stage at graduation, he wore all 4 CTE cords offered at Mohawk, his valedictorian medal, and his GPA cord. Quentin continually challenged himself, and put in the long hours, and attended the tutoring sessions to ensure success.

Quentin is a great ambassador for Mohawk and the culture we want to build. Although he has a full plate with his academic and extracurricular pursuits, he takes time to genuinely connect with his peers at every level. We affectionately refer to a group of middle school students as the Quentin fan club because they hang on to his every word. This is not only because of all the cool things he can do and teach them but also because he treats them with kindness and respect. He has been a great role model for these middle school students.

Quentin can be counted on to be at the right place, doing the right thing, at the right time. We have never had attendance issues despite him accessing lane classes at LCC. In fact, Quentin can often be found in Ms. Fisher's room on off days, working on special projects for the district. Quentin's talent and creativity have made him a go-to person for graphics, printing, posters, and more.

We have been lucky to have Quentin at Mohawk. We are excited for him to move on and do great things, but he will be missed by many. We are proud to recognize him as the final ESPY winner of this year.”
